Preparing You & Your Dog for the Ring

Whether you're a first-time exhibitor or a seasoned competitor aiming for perfection, Perfect Pooches Dog Training & Grooming offers structured conformation show training to help you and your dog shine in the ring.

Held weekly at our 2,000 sq. ft. indoor facility just outside Coalhurst, our show handling classes are designed to build confidence, technique, and performance readiness. We welcome both adult exhibitors and junior handlers — because everyone deserves the chance to succeed in this rewarding sport.

What Is Show Training?

Conformation training teaches handlers and dogs how to present themselves in a dog show setting. Unlike obedience or rally, where dogs follow commands, conformation is about showcasing your dog’s physical structure, movement, and temperament according to breed standards.

Our show training focuses on:

  • Proper stacking and presentation for your breed
  • Gaiting and clean ring movement
  • Getting and holding attention in the ring
  • Ring procedures, judge interactions, and handling cues
  • Confidence-building for both dog and handler
  • Managing distractions, ring nerves, and new environments

Whether you're preparing for CKC or AKC events — or just want to gain experience in a non-competitive setting — we provide the skills and support you need.

Class Format & Fun Matches

Weekly Classes:

  • Held on a weekly basis at our indoor facility in Coalhurst
  • Each class includes individual and group practice, judge simulation, and feedback
  • Focus on breed-specific stacking, gaiting, and ring etiquette
  • Supportive and encouraging environment — no pressure, just progress

Fun Matches:

We host periodic Fun Matches (mini dog shows) to give handlers and dogs the chance to:

  • Practice under real ring conditions
  • Get feedback from experienced evaluators
  • Build confidence before entering sanctioned shows
  • Socialize with other handlers and dogs in a show-like setting

Fun Matches are open to junior and adult handlers and often draw local exhibitors from across Southern Alberta.

Supporting the Next Generation: Junior Handlers

At Perfect Pooches, we’re proud to include Junior Handlers in all show training activities. Young handlers receive tailored instruction in:

  • Dog safety and control
  • Breed-specific handling
  • Showmanship and ring confidence
  • Sportsmanship and respect for the breed

We believe junior handlers are the future of dog sports, and we welcome youth participants of all skill levels.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does my dog need to be a specific breed?

Yes — conformation training is intended for purebred dogs being shown to a breed standard. Mixed breeds are welcome in other training programs (obedience, rally, agility).

  • Can I attend if I’ve never shown before?

Absolutely. Many of our clients are first-time exhibitors. We walk you through every step of the process so you and your dog feel confident in and out of the ring.

  • How old should my dog be to start?

We welcome young puppies to adult dogs, as long as they’re physically mature enough for show handling and up to date on vaccines.

  • How do I sign up?

Contact Evelyn directly for current class availability and Fun Match dates. You can also check our Facebook page for schedule updates.
